Supported conversions
Conversion boundaries: Documents convert within their own family. A
spreadsheet can become a PDF or another spreadsheet format, but not a Word
document. Any other combination returns
400 with an Unsupported format conversion message.csv exports the first sheet.
To extract plain text from a document, use OCR with .txt.
Requesting a conversion
Add the target format as the file extension, or pass it withformat. Both URLs return the same file:
.pdf on a PDF) returns the original.
Example: Word document to PDF
Converting a file you haven’t uploaded
To convert a document in one call, upload it to Convert Document (POST /api/v1/convert) with the format you want. The result is saved as a
new asset, in the folder you name or your default folder.
Both count toward the same monthly conversions. If you’ve already converted
the same document the same way through its fetch URL,
POST /convert reuses
that result for free.
Processing time
Most documents convert in a few seconds and are returned in the same request with200 OK.
Large files can take longer. When a conversion isn’t ready in time, Dreep responds with 202 Accepted:
- Browsers (
Accept: text/html) get a “Processing” page that refreshes automatically. - API clients get
{ "message": "Asset is processing", "code": 202 }.
200 OK with the file.
If the document can’t be converted, for example because it’s corrupt or password-protected, Dreep returns 400 with a message explaining why.
Plan limits
Each newly converted file counts as one conversion. Fetching a file that has already been converted is free.
Once you reach your monthly limit, new conversions return
402 until your usage resets, or until you buy a +1,000 conversions add-on ($4.99). Files you’ve already converted keep working.
Access control
Conversions follow the access rules of the folder the document is in. Documents in signed folders need a validexp and sig on the conversion URL, just like the original file. Conversions also work on your custom domain.
